Metaphorical Associative Cards
MAC Cards are a self-exploration and therapy method that allows individuals to understand their deepest emotions and unconscious mental processes. Using symbols and images, this method facilitates access to the subconscious, promoting inner understanding and resolving emotional challenges. MAC sessions create a safe and supportive environment where participants can explore and understand their feelings and life challenges.
MAC or Metaphorical Associative Cards is a therapy and self-exploration method that uses visual cards with images, symbols, and words. In 1982, MAC cards were first created by German artist Ely Raman and psychotherapist Moritz Egetmeyer, who together developed the “OH” card deck aimed at activating both the human mind and emotions.
The idea was to create a tool that would help people delve deeper into their emotions and unconscious mental processes through associations and personal interpretations. MAC is a key to the human subconscious and has become popular in psychology, psychotherapy, coaching, art therapy, and other fields that require an intuitive and visually-based approach for self-exploration and problem-solving.
How Do Metaphorical Associative Cards Work?
The cards typically depict various people, places, symbols, or abstract images. When a person looks at a card, they are asked to express the associations that arise and explain what they see or how they feel about the specific image. This method allows hidden emotions and thoughts to surface, as the images or words act as metaphors that bypass the conscious mind’s barriers, accessing deeper layers of the subconscious.
To ensure the method is effective, several aspects must be considered:
A Safe and Supportive Environment
The therapy or coaching session should take place in a safe, supportive setting where the individual can feel free and relaxed. Sessions can be conducted in person or remotely online, either individually or in groups.
A Skilled Facilitator
Effective use of the cards requires a professional facilitator trained in working with MAC. A good facilitator knows how to ask questions, guide the conversation, and help the client uncover personal insights hidden behind the selected cards.
Openness and Willingness to Explore
For MAC cards to be effective, it is crucial for the client to be ready to engage in the process and explore their emotions and thoughts. The client’s openness and interaction with the session facilitator are essential for uncovering problems and finding solutions, bringing answers from the subconscious to conscious awareness.
How Do I Work?
I conduct MAC card sessions both in person and online. I use this therapy method to help clients view situations from a different perspective, thereby resolving various challenges and issues in their personal lives, relationships, work matters, family dynamics, and emotional well-being. In my opinion, this method is incredibly effective in helping individuals understand and express their feelings during moments of confusion. It fosters self-connection, enabling clients to see solutions and take the next steps toward improving their situation. It also helps uncover available resources within themselves and their external circumstances.
The MAC card method offers a variety of techniques that are tailored to the client’s specific needs or problems. I continuously enhance my skills by learning new techniques through courses and seminars.
